Global Security

LAST UPDATED: 7.19.22

I have long been inspired by the ethos of the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize-winning Pugwash Conferences for Science and World Affairs, which initially assembled scientists advocating for disarmament at the height of the Cold War, and played a valuable and remarkable role in non-proliferation efforts in the second half of the twentieth century. Likewise, my work has been informed by its ongoing passion for facilitating “dialogues across divides.” My approach is perhaps best articulated by the two tag lines I chose of my institutes: one a brick-and-mortar Institute I founded and led at Tufts, the Institute for Global Leadership, whose mantra I chose to be Thinking Beyond Boundaries, Acting Across Borders. And now my virtual institute, The Trebuchet, I formed in 2016 as I was becoming Emeritus, and whose mantra is Breaking Down Barriers and Building Bridges.

Pugwash seeks a world free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. Through our long-standing tradition of ‘dialogue across divides’ that also earned us the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995, Pugwash aims to develop and support the use of scientific, evidence-based policymaking, focusing on areas where nuclear and WMD risks are present. By facilitating track 1.5 and track II dialogues, we foster creative discussions on ways to increase the security of all sides and promote policy development that is cooperative and forward-looking.
